Currently I have 6. |
I am going to list some details here so you can get a general idea of how things have worked for us.
Male 19yrs old -PJ
Male 13yrs old - Noshi
Male 5 yrs old -Capt'Billy
Male 1 yrs old -Gilligan
Female 8yrs old-Rio
Female 15 yrs old Ms Kevin
PJ (19) and Rio (8) share a 13x13 room and get along fine.
Ms Kev (15) and Capt'Billy (5) share a 9by11ft room and get along fine.
Noshi gets along with no one and has his own 6x9 "room"
Gilligan, the baby, is hated by all.
Figuring out who could tolerate who took a lot of trial and error and several bites that required a few vet visits and quite a few stitches.
Quite often the pairs will seperate for days , moving to other areas of the house- we have many basking areas around...and they do not miss one another.
Dont fool yourself into think they need company. All of ours except our very first were rescues but I am tellin ya, they dont need iggy friends. In the wild they only come together to mate or eat , and have miles to spread out if they are not getting along.
If your ig seems sulky, try providing a window if you havnt already, all y igs have windows and will spend hours and hours gazing.
If you do decide to get another, plan ahead.
Start off in seperate areas , just incase the new ig is ill in some way.
Have an addition cage it can go in and after 2 weeks, place the cages near one another and see how they respond.
Eventually let the bigger one out to check out the little one.
Signs it wont be ending well? Lot of bobbing from your older ig , either not eating , turning dark in color due to stress and my personal favorite, taking a crap on or near the other :)
