Can anyone help me with this habitat question?

I have a 50 gallon glass tank for a small species of alligator lizard. |
I want to cool one small area of substrate in a corner, to create a cool-place refuge if he ever needs it.
If I used a thin walled or glass tube, 2 1/2 inches in diameter, made an opening in the wooden tank lid to fit the tube snugly, and pushed the tube to about 3 inches from the substrate I want to cool, and the tube were long enough to end about 12 inches above the roof (foam insulated outside the hab, maybe the whole length of the tube needs to be insulated), would cool room air flow down the tube, or would warm habitat air flow up the tube?
I like passive systems. But I could also fasten a very small muffin fan to the top of the tube.
