In a nut shell:
It's modern. The senate costumes are very Armani. Mandarin collared suits, but designed so that you get that kind of "Toga" feel. Very sharp! The commoners are all wearing street clothes which I think was clever. Oh, the "battle" gear..imagine Storm Troopers from Star Wars meets the Marines and a couple of Nazi SS guards are thrown in. It was a little confusing keeping up with who was on which "team" but it was still fantastic. You've got Mark Anthony's guys all decked out in this futuristic gear and then here comes the rag-tag traitors’ armies in their Camo. I couldn't help but giggle. The sets were all just gorgeous. Everything was very streamlined and modern. The lighting and audio were great. Everything fit perfectly. Kudos to those guys!
There’s a great fight scene when the senators stab Caesar. He fights back! Since we normally see Caesar stand there stunned while he's being stabbed, I thought it was interesting that he actually fought back. Now, I have to admit at one point I stopped paying attention for a bit. Ger was lying there playing dead Caesar and I couldn’t help but wonder what is he thinking about lying there, “playing” dead. I also wanted to poke him and see what would happen, you know like the soldiers at Buckingham Palace. I don’t know why. So there is a spot in that scene that's a bit blank for me. Another great scene is Brutus and Mark Anthony giving the funeral speeches. The plebians are actually in the crowd delivering the lines. It was genius. The audience was drawn into the scene. I actually felt like Mark Anthony was yelling at me. I was petrified; I thought I had done something wrong.
Now I do have to say, Act 1 scene 2 is a little choppy, for lack of a better phrase. The dialog between Cassius and Brutus just seemed awkward. I don't know if it was the phrasing or the fact that I just couldn't get into Tom Rooney’s Cassius. However when Casca comes in it picks up. Michael Spencer-Davis was AWESOME. I actually think he was my favorite character. I wanted more Casca! Also, the scene between Calphurnia and Caesar, when she's trying to persuade him to stay home, Ger completely lost me there. He got a little clockwork but eventually he got back into it. The only other thing I found a little odd was after the intermission at the beginning of the second act, there's a video screen. I have no idea what the purpose was. It was a little superfluous and distracting.
Let me know if you have any specific questions. I'm trying to think of everything, but there was so much to take in. Definitely let me know what you think after you see it. Enjoy All!
