Add me to the list of those in Stratford this past weekend for Midsummer's first preview performance (and count me on the floor laughing with everyone else! The Mechanicals were a riot!!) Did anyone else go to the after-show discussion in the cafe? (I was the one in the back with the question about actors keeping their work fresh for themselves and the audience near the end of a long run...insightful answers were given too)
It was Ernest the next afternoon, where Brian Bedford absolutely stole the show; followed by Caesar in the evening. My theatre buddy and I split on that one. She disliked the costuming and found the whole play difficult to follow, especially the second half with the battle uniforms. I, on the other hand, thought the men's suit/toga blend was an interesting extrapolation of where current fashion might be if Rome had remained in power. Also, I had the advantage over her in having seen the play a time or two before in other productions...makes it easier to follow. We were in the heights of the balcony where we had a grand overview of the staging and movements and very personal connection to the crowd scenes (don't want to say more for spoilage)but not so great for seeing facial expression.
Question probably best answered by Quinn : Before Caesar I left a small gift and note for GWD with the house manager, realized i had not put his name on either of them! Pretty sure I mentioned who it was for, but the manager was buzzing around pre-show busy of course -- is there any way to know if Ger received it? Sure would like to know! Thanks.
