My Oberon! what visions have I seen! Methought I was enamoured of an ass. A Midsummer Night's Dream, 4. 1
I just returned form a wonderful vacation in Stratford! Isn’t it great when you get a chance to travel with those people who, over the years, have become your “life-long friends”? The ones you see maybe once a year (if lucky) and yet it seems you saw them only yesterday? What a perfect vacation!
Of course, we picked Stratford because of GWD - and so we saw Macbeth, Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We also took in Phedre.
“The Scottish Play” Well, Ger was great as Duncan but the rest of the play IMO fell flat. I saw it in May and it seemed slightly better that time. Sorry, but the leads just seemed tired. Lady M (Yanna McIntosh) seemed to be sleepwalking through the entire play as did Macbeth (Colm Feore). There was no passion of any kind in the play. Sad when (other than GWD) the only kudos I feel are warranted for that performance go to James Blendick as the doctor and Tom Rooney as the Porter. However, Macbeth is one of my least favorite Shakespeare plays so my opinion may be greatly colored by that (but I don't think so!).
“Great Caesar’s Ghost!” “Julius Caesar” - I liked this version. I like the “formality” and costuming of the director’s (James MacDonald) Rome. The battles of the second half of the play are less appealing to me but, of course, totally necessary to the story. The calm menace of Caesar’s ghost - Ger can do so much with just his carriage and stare!
"A Midsummer Night's Dream" My Oberon! what visions have I seen! Methought I was enamoured of an ass.
OMG!! I thought nothing would ever surpass the fun of Patrick Tucker’s “The Taming of the Shrew” but sorry, Patrick - it happened. Several of my traveling companions also attended “the Shrewthering” and we all felt the same.
I have never laughed so hard in a theatre. Dream is fantastic, a touch more modern than ethereal which made it easier to follow. IMO, it is well packaged. The cast seemed to be truly enjoying themselves. It’s a comedy so why not go there when describing GWD performance - Ger’s Bottom is a delight. Laura Condlln as Helena and Tom Rooney as Puck also shine. BTW, Rooney is also Cassius in Julius Caesar and does a wonderful Porter in Macbeth. And what a curtain call!!! Do not miss that!
You have 36 chances (performances left) to see this. If you haven’t planned a vacation yet consider Stratford and definitely Dream!
"Phedre " We also saw Phedre which stars Seana McKenna (Queen Isabella to GWD's King Ferdinand in last year's "Fuente Ovejuna"). The set is minimalistic, the costuming gorgeous, the performances outstanding. The play itself is depressing but well done.
Claire Lautier was also outstanding. I've seen Claire in several productions and something I've noticed is how perfectly her lines are delivered - diction and emotion are impeccable. Her Aricie was excellent.
"DNGG " Oh, and if you didn’t see the notice - “Do Not Go Gentle” WILL NOT be presented in Stratford this year, the logistics were just too difficult to work out for a one night performance. NYC is still on so plan for that. As to Ger’s future projects - well, there are some plans for 2010 but I can’t say right now because nothing is final.
Hi to the Diane & Marg who I saw in Stratford, virtual wave to any club members I may not have recognized/seen.
Take care all! q

Add me to the list of those in Stratford this past weekend for Midsummer's first preview performance (and count me on the floor laughing with everyone else! The Mechanicals were a riot!!) Did anyone else go to the after-show discussion in the cafe? (I was the one in the back with the question about actors keeping their work fresh for themselves and the audience near the end of a long run...insightful answers were given too) It was Ernest the next afternoon, where Brian Bedford absolutely stole the show; followed by Caesar in the evening. My theatre buddy and I split on that one. She disliked the costuming and found the whole play difficult to follow, especially the second half with the battle uniforms. I, on the other hand, thought the men's suit/toga blend was an interesting extrapolation of where current fashion might be if Rome had remained in power. Also, I had the advantage over her in having seen the play a time or two before in other productions...makes it easier to follow. We were in the heights of the balcony where we had a grand overview of the staging and movements and very personal connection to the crowd scenes (don't want to say more for spoilage)but not so great for seeing facial expression. Question probably best answered by Quinn : Before Caesar I left a small gift and note for GWD with the house manager, realized i had not put his name on either of them! Pretty sure I mentioned who it was for, but the manager was buzzing around pre-show busy of course -- is there any way to know if Ger received it? Sure would like to know! Thanks. Elaine

oops...I think I put the wrong email address on my post...still groggy from travel. Got it right this time. Just in case you needed me to identify the contents of the gift box I'd just as soon do that off the public board. Thanks Quinn, Elaine

Thanx Quinn for the mini reviews. I'm heading for Stratford at the end of the month and will see Dream on the !st of September. I'm taking a friend who has never been to Stratford or seen Ger perform before. I'm so looking forward to seeing things through her eyes. Anne
The voice coach for A Midsummer Night's Dream is Natsuko Ohama - Captain Cohen from Forever Knight - so keep your eyes open for her! Some of the theatres include her picture with the company head shots so look for it - it is stunning!
Ger is having a blast with so many friends in Stratford!

Hi Quinn,
I am soo *TOTALLY* jealous of you...LOL!! I really wished I could have got across to see all at Stratford, but just couldn't manage it but am so grateful for your reviews. Hopefully see you in NYC later in the year?
Heather, I wish you could have been there. I know you'd love A Midsummer Night's Dream especially! It was a great weekend, even with the thunderstorms on Sunday. I hope you can make it to New York.
I am so frustrated. I had bought my tickets last november to go the week of aug 18-23. But yet another herniated disc in my back put all those plans to waste. Please keep all the reviews coming. I am so sad i cant go back this year and see all the wonderful plays that are going on. My boyfriend is hoping maybe we can go to nyc in December so i can at least see one show with GWD this year. But my luck this year i'll wind up breaking my leg or something. I wish i could get my hands on some of the play programs. Ok i will stop my whining and get back to the pain pills and dreaded physical therapy tomorrow. everyone who does get their chance to go have a drink for me while you are there. And try to give Ger a kiss for me. LOL
