I love the name Cillian & I love Cian, too (both are on my short list should I ever reproduce)! I think it's weird to use Cian as a nn for Cillian, though. I mean, they're separate names; it's kind of like naming a kid Richard and calling him Bob. That's just my 2 cents...
Also... Although to name nerds, and people who are into Irish names Cillian and Cian look totally normal, the rest of the world will have a hard time with the spelling. I know a girl from Ireland named Ciara (KEE uh ra), and it drives her crazy to try to explain that in Irish, there's no letter K. Kilian and Kian are spellings that are used in Ireland sometimes anyway... It may seem like selling out, but I'd recommend it just to keep English speakers from calling a kid Silly-ann or Cyan. I have my fair share of fun if I ever go to the doctor's office or something and they look at my name and read out "NOAH." Then saying "norah with an H" and having people be really confused and then spelling it Norha or Nohra or something...
