Posted by The home office on 8/18/2002, 6:17 am As for your submission... Did you send a SASE with submission? If not the chances of getting a reply are pretty slim. DON'T call to "follow up", they hate that and it will work against you. My suggestion would be to submit a treatment or outline for a different story and keep doing that pretty often (every two or three weeks) to show that you're working on different things. If you still don't get a response then the only other route is going to cons. Again, it's not the best place to pitch stuff, editors are usually crazy busy at these things and they're not very open to critique a writing sample (there's just no time!), but it is a good venue to meet editors and other writers for pointers. Be friendly, ask questions clearly and briefly regarding submissions and don't grovel. Listen to their answer, thank them and move on. If you're at a party after the con, keep the business to a minimum and just present yourself as a likeable, pleasant human being they'll remember the next time one of your submissions and/or request to submit a pitch crosses their desk. The idea is to stand out from the hundreds of fanboys who have the "next great batman idea" and are all banging on editor so and so's door to get a job. That editor has a very large filing cabinet in his office FILLED with HUNDREDS of pencil samples, ink samples, names of writers and letterers and cover artists and the guy he went to college with who he's been friends with for years who's okay but needs to work on his character development. That's what you're up against. The best way to get their attention? Scroll down and see the post regarding mini comics. If the resume doesn't cut it then entertain the hell out of the editor by sending him/her a complimentary ish so he/she will remember your name at the next con and go "Hey, Colin, I liked that bit with the asthmatic toad, what else are you working on?" Oh yeah, it could take a few years. Be prepared for that.
Okay, I'm not scheduled to be at Comix and Stories on this coming weekend, but I will be at a table during the next Heritage Hall con in September. There's something going on in Victoria but I'm not sure when that is.
