Posted by The home office Brian wrote the beard to be one of those scraggy jobs that look awful yet kids continue to grow 'em kind of things. I pencilled it all scraggy and made his hair all choppy and weird like 355 had been cutting it for him (she's a secret agent! Like she knows how to cut hair!). Jose looked at this mess I drew and inked in a lovely shiny, neat beard and hair. It looked very nice but wasn't really the required result. So I get a call. I'm asked by the editor to ink the beards and hair in a certain number of panels because there's no time to explain how to make it all choppy and messy "just so", this way it looks right and there's a sample of how to do it in future issues. I get photocopies of the pencils sent over in order to trace over them in ink. I'm not a very good inker. Or perhaps it's better to say that I'm not very well equipped to handle such a request. Jose obviously has access to a wider variety of tools as can be seen in his beautiful work. Tiny brushes, big brushes, maybe a rapidograph or two. I look at my side table and see two mugs FULL of every pencil ever made, erasers, sharpeners, ballpoints to fill out the Fed Ex waybill and sign the rent check every month. Pens? Brushes? A few watercoulour brushes from when I painted for WotC a couple of years ago, some crowquills from the White Wolf work I did a few years before that, a half dried bottle of white-out and a pilot fineliner. And the pages have to be out the next day. Oh yay. The end result is an even HEAVIER beard. It's passable, the right choppiness and all but I certainly wish I could have done better. If that weren't rough enough, when the comps come in we learn that the publisher unintentionally went very heavy on the cyan. Instead of a goaty beard that's very thin and gross looking, we now have an over-inked, THICK beard that's made even thicker with a really dark brown patch of colour over top. Can't win fer tryin'. We'll do better in the future Randy.

Okay, I need to explain a couple of things about the beard.
