If he's consistent with a release schedule it shouldn't be too long before he gets a following. If he sends those comics regularly to his favourite editors then chances are some of them may become fans as well. This is a good way to break in since it best displays his work ethic. Good luck!

I have some pointers in the FAQ page on sending out samples but other than that I would recommend going over to boards like the Bendis Board at Jinxworld or Millar's World and posting a call for any writers looking for artists to check out his site. If he's just starting out I wouldn't suggest he quit his job. The comics industry is such a competitive one that it's not uncommon for newcomers to take years to break in. Keep that roof over your head. When he's on a regular contract then sure he can quit but until then the best advice is to either stick it out or look for another job that's both tolerable and flexible enough for him to be able to work on his off time.
