The story I heard was a group of locals got together to stop the deaths of pedestrians using the hiway bridge. At that time it was two lane and no where to walk. It got off to a rough start. People who said they would volunteer apparently didn’t. And I understand there was some money that went south. They tried again, this time successfully.
Occasionally you will see some one standing by the bridge asking for donations for upkeep, which local volunteers take care of to this day. It provides, endless entertainment for young boys who love to swing on it as young girls pass over. Their laughter can be heard for blocks.
