October is low season. Many restaurants are closed or open on limited schedules. You will still find enough places to eat, and you will find the town very quiet and the beach uncrowded. Tepic and Santa Maria del Oro are both fantastic places to visit. If you have time, there are rooms for rent right on the lake at Santa Maria and one or two restaurants (at least there were the last time I was there a few years ago).
