We did it in a rental car a few years back. There was no where to stay at the butterfly site. I believe there could be a couple different places to see them. It was a steep climb for about 40 minutes with a guide. I would recommend you go to morelia and take a tour from there.If you like to do your own thing then try the rental car thing. It was a pretty amazing thing as it resembles the area I come from in BC. I have seen the monarchs in BC \but never knew they spoke spanish till I got there. Enjoy it! any experience is part of life
