I am delighted to announce the release of another Special Edition of my 2003 Manic Miner game: Ma jolie (the lower-case 'j' is important to me, because it is a play on Iva Majoli's surname as well as being French for "My pretty").
It's based on the game-engine from Matthew Smith's classic game from 1983, Manic Miner, where you have to collect up to five items from each room before advancing to the next, whilst avoiding various deadly hazards and solving physical puzzles. The basic controls are left, right, jump... and pause!
Ma jolie was, at the time of its original release, the most mind-bogglingly difficult MM game ever written, with liberal use of quirky features and a need for frame-perfect timing. The Special Edition 2006 was even harder, and the Special Edition 2009 is harder still, since Daniel Gromann brought some more issues to my attention!
But I have also written an easy variant of the game, called Ma jolite, which greatly reduces the mental stress and the need for saving snapshots every few seconds, whilst retaining most of my beloved quirky features (for the uninitiated: I have a catalogue of MM/JSW quirky features on my website).
There are seven changes to Ma jolie since the Special Edition 2006:
1. I have applied to Ma jolie and Ma jolite the patch from Manic Miner: Neighbours - Allana Truman that fixes the bug that corrupts Room 7 when you jump up off the top of the screen.
2. I have changed a couple of cells in "The Hot Room" [1] so that instead of being able to complete the room by dropping to the bottom of the chimney and going round again, you are now forced to do it in the way that Daniel Gromann discovered, which is much more interesting and efficient! This change does not apply to Ma jolite.
3. I have edited a couple of cell-graphics in "The Vatican" [6] for both Ma jolie and Ma jolite, as detailed in the room-documentation in README.TXT.
4. I have put Fire-cells under the items in "Speed 4" [15], so that you are forced to do it in the Daniel Gromann way: leave it to the car to collect them! This change does not apply to Ma jolite.
5. I have added an Earth-cell to "Semi-Perilous Light" [18] to enforce my beloved manoeuvre of jumping up against the Earth-cell above the red VG so as to just avoid it. This change does not apply to Ma jolite.
6. I have updated the BASIC loaders, and removed the erroneous comma from Ma jolite's.
7. I have thoroughly proofread README.TXT, and edited it accordingly.
Ma jolie [Special Edition 2009] is now available for downloading from my website:
