Posted by Jo Margaret, I will certainly try not to hold the fact that you are from "over the ditch" against you!! lol (And the book is still a good read, even if you aren't Australian!! At present, I am actually listening to a series of talks by Richard Rohr, called "Healing our Violence"... it's certainly very thought provoking....so I'm delighted that you are also reading something of his! Michele, you certainly ask the "big" questions! The answer would essentially require a thesis! You asked: "Who in the Church reaches out and tries to include the people on the fringes? Does that ever happen?" My answer would have to be a resounding YES! We are all called to be "in relationship"...with our God and with each other. Sadly, we don't always get it right, however, if we are serious about living our Faith and "membership" of the Church, then we are called to "seek the lost" (those on the fringes). My personal experience has been that when I am ready to respond, there are many "invitations". Kathy says: “Catholics are comfortable in a private religion” and I think by nature that is true. Certainly I believe that as Catholics, we could re evaluate how we reach out to others…. Michele, you then asked: "Who is this God? How do you KNOW that this God exists? What experiences in your life lead you to say this will such certainty?" Wow! The most basic answer would be: because I choose to believe. Overwhelmingly, my life experiences give me more "evidence" that there IS a God, than not. There is an undeniable sense that there is a "higher power" (for want of a better expression). lol A sense that I am not alone! Michele, I sincerely hope that one day soon you can find a place to ‘belong’ and ‘come home’! For my part, I am not in the same State as you, however, I do extend the invitation and encourage you to keep trying and not give up. The table is set and there’s a place with your name on it! Jo
