Posted by Kevin Bates on July 16, 2002, 5:26 pm This week the Human Rights Commission is listening to many people expressing their concern for the well-being of children and youth being held in our detention centres - it's amazing how we can just sit by and watch - it takes a huge effort to move such a big block of opinion.
The weight of public opinion about the asylum seekers has propped up the government to the point where they feel that they need to take notice of no one - not the United Nations, not the Churches, and certainly not the Opposition - they feel that they can do what they like - let's keep talking to each other and to anyone who will listen so that Australia can reclaim its generous heart.
