Posted by Kevin Bates on September 4, 2002, 1:49 pm Dear All Vic O'Callaghan
My mate Vic has emailed me - he and his family are working tirelessly to provide help for the Timorese people in a practical way - Below is a copy of his email - if anyone has any contacts he'd be delighted to hear from you.
You can contact him through this page.
Attached are two photographs of Josie the Landcruiser. This endeavour has sparked much interest and hope among the Sisters who will be using the vehicle to deliver the Tatem reading books to village schools throughout East Timor. As an added bonus we discovered that a large federal government department was moving house and needed to divest themselves of three pallets of office supplies. Now these supplies of pens, writing paper and the like will be handed out to the schools during September/October, at the same time as the reading books. This will give the kids a good start for the new school year.
Seeing this project is moving at a pace, there has been another need expressed. If the Sisters had a robust caravan or campervan, they would be able to be far more effective in their teacher training as they travel around. Being able to stay in one place without putting people out of their own meagre accommodation would be a real advantage.
IF anyone has a contact in the caravan game, or an idea to help with this initiative, just let me know.
We are working on the opposite principal to the boy who had his finger in the dyke to stop the water flowing. If we get a glimpse of opportunity we will keep at it until something flows by way of the kids in East Timor. With 50% of the population under 15 years of age, education is vital.
Warm regards
Vic
