Posted by Kevin Bates The dream of a more generous Australia, and the way in which so many heroic people embody that dream already gives one great heart. People are so good when given the opportunity and the call comes to rise above the needs of oneself. I thank God for the spirit that emerges from our tragedies - the mystery of the Cross and Resurrection is our most powerful and poignant gift as we break it open yet again in a time of national sorrow. We grapple to find the right words, but our poetry, music and rituals see our hearts shine with the love which is our greatest gift to each other.

Today, Sunday is a day of national mourning for the losses our people and those of other nations, particularly the Balinese people, suffered last weekend in the bombings. With a measured dignity the people have marked the occasion and it was symbolised so well in the memorial event conducted in Sydney's Domain today.
