Posted by Kevin Bates What he's really doing of course is feeding off our fear so that we will continue to support his tenure in power, and keeping us alert and anxious is a perfect follow-up to the fear-based slogans of last year's election campaign. He sounds so pious, moral and a fearless leader. My fear is that his strategy is more calculated and cunning than that. Keeping everyone on the edge of their seats, he rightly reckons that no one will vote for an alternative group while such threats abound. No doubt there are real threats to our security at this time and we need to be vigilant. Our deeper threat is our own self-absorption and our fear of refugees, our galloping wealth and its accompanying unhappiness, and the despair among our young people as they continue to leave us before their time. Some pre-emptive strikes in these areas would be appropriate.

John Howard - you've got to love him as he has the well-being of all Australians at heart and will go the biff first if he sees anyone likely to cause us pain. That makes us all feel warm and safe, and his noble-sounding rhetoric sounds so convincing.
