Thanks again for your encouragement - we must keep makign oruselves heard wherever we can, as you say, so that the dream of the Gospel gets some chance at being enfleshed here. --Previous Message--
Thanks Mary for your comments - the game continues unabated eh with the launch of the new terrorism package by the government. Michael Leunig has it right in a pieve in his new book where he reckons the terrorist has wormed his way inside us and really lives there. I think many asylum seekers would agree with him.
: Kevin,
: Your comments on Howard's style of doing
: politics allow some shafts of light to
: pierce the opaque shell of false security
: and decency which Howard cleverly uses to
: hide his machiavellian use of power and
: control.
: The style of politics he has used over the
: last 6 years has led to abuses of human
: beings such as I thought we would never
: see in Australia, starkly so in the case
: of the asylum seekers. I now know how
: Germany came under the control of Hitler -
: good people were simply silenced by the
: way the government manipulated the laws
: for its own purposes and allowed the end
: to justify the means it used. When a
: government uses such totalitarian politics
: in order to stay in power, then the seed
: has already been sown for a
: police/military state.
: Your forum is an important place for little
: people - like me - to join in the
: conversation as part of my search to live
: truthfully. For me there is an integral
: link between that and being faithful to
: the spirit of the Kingdom Jesus proclaimed
: to all peoples - unconditional love, and
: freedom from all that keeps us captive to
: fear and injustive.
: Shalom,
: Mary Roddy.

: John Howard - you've got to love him as he
: has
: the well-being of all Australians at heart
: and will go the biff first if he sees
: anyone likely to cause us pain. That
: makes us all feel warm and safe, and his
: noble-sounding rhetoric sounds so
: convincing.
: What he's really doing of course is feeding
: off our fear so that we will continue to
: support his tenure in power, and keeping
: us alert and anxious is a perfect
: follow-up to the fear-based slogans of
: last year's election campaign.
: He sounds so pious, moral and a fearless
: leader. My fear is that his strategy is
: more calculated and cunning than that.
: Keeping everyone on the edge of their
: seats, he rightly reckons that no one will
: vote for an alternative group while such
: threats abound.
: No doubt there are real threats to our
: security at this time and we need to be
: vigilant. Our deeper threat is our own
: self-absorption and our fear of refugees,
: our galloping wealth and its accompanying
: unhappiness, and the despair among our
: young people as they continue to leave us
: before their time.
: Some pre-emptive strikes in these areas would
: be appropriate.
