Posted by Kevin Bates My question, and the question that has exercised most anti-war people all through this dreadful time, is why is this kind of war the only way to topple Hussein's regime? Surely with the sophisticated intelligence-gathering technology at the disposal of the United States, along with the ability to infiltrate regimes covertly and swiftly, why has it been necessary to wreak terror on the people that the Coalition says it is liberating? Why all the deaths of civilians, Kurds, US and British soldiers? Why the destruction of so much of a beautiful city? Why the ignoring of the voices of moderation in the U.S. legislature and community? Why the ignoring of the other millions of voices raised in opposition to this war all around the world, including as Michael Moore pointed out, the Pope and the Dixie Chicks?!! Today the Catholic and Orthodox bishops of Iraq have combined to plea for a ceasefire, which Colin Powell says is not an option. Here is a snippet of the text from one of the Iraqi Bishops: The bishop said there were growing numbers of civilian casualties. Neither human rights nor civil rights were being respected. "The war itself is a violation of human rights", he added. "With what right do they do this? The UN Security Council must make decisions, not single states. I say to you that our children cry out to heaven; our women, youth and old people ask God for peace: Peace, not war! Stop the war!" My questions still stand, and people still die for no good reason - many by accident, and many in the fighting. It is indeed a terrible moment - and while the world will be well rid of Saddam and his cronies, the end never does justify the means.

As the US-led forces make their way through the streets of Baghdad, evidence emerges more and more of the terrors of the Saddam Hussein regime. Without doubt this man and his crew have perpetrated great evil and violence on their own people and the world will be a better place with them out of the way.
"United with our Muslim brothers, we ask everyone to issue an urgent appeal for a ceasefire," Bishop Shlemon Warduni said. "The bombing does not stop; it is increasingly atrocious and terrifying", he said.
