These are a handful of people in some kind of serious need and we we don't even want to hear their story. We jsut tow them out to international waters and refuse to admit we've done it. This disgraceful performance once again demonstrates the pathetic fear-based politics which are dominating our nation at this time. The comedian and author John Doyle, of HG and Roy fame, last night in an ABC interview said he didn't know what it meant to be Australian any more. I am inclined to be with him - it is well past embarrassment, and is at the point of profound shame. The only thing that shifts our policy and practice, is when the Prime Minister is caught in a hapless photo with two children he had previously refused to consider for entry here. The photo has shamed him into action and the spin doctors busily deny the connections!! Please can we do better?

Well here we go again - the lovely Amanda Vanstone is in the game now, merrily excising hundreds of islands because 14 Turkish Kurds (it seems that's who they are), have approached Melville Island, seeking refuge here.
