Posted by Kevin Bates Another take on it could be that the Government is really worried about this election and they are pulling every string to get themselves back in for a fourth term. Another instance is the thorough muck-raking job being done on Labor Leader Mark Latham - there is plenty there to point fingers at of course, but the trivial and pathetic efforts to discredit him, with the aid of the neo-conservative journalist pack, has been transparently tawdry. Once again, the level of our national debate is tragically tabloid in style, and lacking in substance. The up-coming election campaign promises more of the same I fear, and people will actually vote on the back of this kind of piecemeal "information". We actually thought there we weapons of mass destruction in Iraq ready to use - so I suppose nothing is suprising!

One of many strange turnarounds by the Howard Government as the election time approaches, is the release of so many asylum seekers, who to this point have been deemed to be not genuine refugees. Amanda Vanstone of course claims it is a natural consequence of the success of the Government's policy.
