Posted by Kevin Bates The vision that fired us a generation ago, has long gone, and the people who are concerned with asylum seekers, aboriginal reconciliation, health care for all, aged care, global environmental issues, are all treated as fringe players and in fact are becoming more so. Manne suggests that if we are concerned about issues, we need to work ourselves without that hope that any major political party will work with us. I wonder what the generation following this sad development will look like!!

Musing since the election on how how things are with our nation, I was confirmed in my musings by Robert Manne in this morning's paper. He saw the imprint that John Howard has put on our nation, as one of self-satisfaction, and Labor had no answer to it. We have become a more comfortable, economically well-off, and self-centred culture and we voted to maintain and develop that.
