Posted by Jo It’s great that you are continuing to read and explore your questions…welcome back! Thanks for commenting on Kev’s article http://www.kevinbates.com/reflections/disciple_educator.htm I found it very interesting to re visit it… Whilst I “hear” and agree totally with everything Kev writes, there was something about the words “pre packaged” that struck a chord with me. As a mother of six, who all attend Catholic schools I am keenly aware that there is so much more to “it” than what the school can offer. (A great deal is expected of schools today and I struggle sometimes to keep up with everything that is jammed into the curriculum!) I have also found that often my own views on what I would like the school to offer, varies quite considerably to that of other parents. Beyond what is offered at school (in an ideal world) there is the family, church community, God parents etc. who all contribute to help make “sense” of the “pre packaged” versions offered. No school can be expected to provide all aspects of our Faith education and it cannot stand in isolation…it must be complimented with “experience”. We don’t always get it “right”, but hopefully those with doubts aren’t expected to just “keep quiet”, but have the opportunity for making connections…whether we are in our teens, or our 40’s and beyond!! :-) The words “pre packaged” also conjured up images of a gift that we are offered. Ultimately it is up to our children and ourselves to take time to unwrap that gift and make it our own. At 40 I am still discovering dimensions of the gift and sorting out what is “real” for me…what questions are important…which answers I really “need” and basically enjoying what I would sometimes call a love/hate relationship with our Church. It sounds to me Margaret, like you have begun to also look at the gift…what an exciting time for you. In referring back to a retreat, when you first left school…maybe this is a clue for you as to where you can “begin again”? I’d be interested if you would care to share what image you would choose now… would you still select the same sunset? You’re not alone Margaret…keep searching! I am confident there are many delightful surprises waiting for you! Jo Link: http://www.kevinbates.com/reflections/disciple_educator.htm

Dear Margaret,
Your “companion” on “once Catholic” sounds very insightful…isn’t it great when we find people who can “call it as they see it” and in doing so, open our eyes? Have you come up with any kind of answer to this central question yet?
