I'm sorry to have to tell you all that Mary Merchant has passed away.
Mary was a good, close friend of my sister Vicki ('66) back in the day when they were all just a bunch of giggling, boy-crazy girls. Mary always stayed in touch with our family after my sister had passed away back in 1967 and it was just last summer that we saw her again at her own father's funeral at the Hillcrest Congregational Church on Gregory Lane. Her obituary is in the January 27, 2009 edition of the Contra Costa Times:

Mary Merchant Burr Former Pleasant Hill Resident Survived by husband Ronald Burr, mother Lea Merchant, sister Ruth Merchant, brother-in-law of Dennis Sasaki, niece Nicole Sasaki and nephew Christopher Sasaki. Mary spent her life helping others, she was loved by all who knew her. A memorial service will be held at 2pm Jan. 31 at Hillcrest Congregational Church, 404 Gregory Lane, Pleasant Hill, CA. Donations in Mary's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1885 Oak Park Blvd., Pleasant Hill, CA.
