getting to gudalajara

Hi,
I may be in La Manzanillo for a week doing a workshop. Afterwards I am thinking about traveling to Gudalajara if it's fairly easy. How long does it take to travel and what is the best way to get there? Bus? Rent a car? I may be traveling alone so safety is an issue as well.
Also can anyone tell me what Puesta Del Sol is like? The hotel.
