La Manzanilla, Mexico

Jim,
When I snorkeled there in February 2007, we went to the south end of the bay right near the town a few times for convenience, and it was sub-par. Then we went to Mora Beach near the small village of Tenacatita at the North end of the bay, and it was spectacular. We initially arranged for a boat to take us across the ten+ mile bay. But when we showed up at the beach, we discovered that our captain had to be in the fields that morning to pick tomatoes. We were ready to snorkle though; so, we hailed a taxi and spent 30-minutes driving there. We convinced him that we would like him to return in the afternoon to pick us up again. The snokeling at Mora Beach was some of the greatest we have ever seen in the world. Okay, my world is mostly limited to Hawaii and Mexico. It has a lot of coral that has not been disturbed very much, and comes in multiple vibrant colors. A lot of the colorful fish that you might see in Hawaii, and a few small (18" in diameter) sting rays or skates. The visability in the water was fantastic. Mora Beach is out on a penisula and they let RVs and tenters camp there. When we were there, Chuy was an 80-year old Mexican man at the beach who has been self-appointed to care for the coral for the past 15 years. He alerts you with his whistle if you are not doing the correct thing (i.e., standing on the coral, taking coral from the beach). He had a little palapa on the edge of the beach and with it provides education to the visitors so they have a better attitude about the environment. Chuy worked as an Architect, an artist, and a rancher, before having a passion for this coral. We are returning to La Manzanilla in December, and will definately return for snorkeling.
