Hi Shelia! Sounds like your Hollyhocks have the fungus known as rust, which is common on Hollyhocks. While it rarely causes death of a plant, it may cause ugly discoloration and dwarfing. Here is a web link that explains more about Hollyhock rust and how to control it. Hope this helps!
