Many times to rejuvenate an old plant, you will need to dig up the entire plant and divide it into smaller segments. Old plants tend to get woody crowns in the center, with newer growth to the outside of the plant. Yesterday in our nursery, we divided a 20 year old plant and obtained 21 new divisions (10 people wanted to buy the plant during our Memorial Day open house, so had to split it up for propagation.) Dividing an old plant will take some effort. Commercial divisions are normally 3-5 eyes, but you may wish to have larger divisions. Fall is the time to dig/transplant. We are digging/selling and transplanting now here in Iowa. In northern areas, replant with buds 2" deep. In southern climates, 1" deep is better.
