Hello Nancy. If your Clematis blooms in the Spring or early summer, then it will produce flowers on the "old" wood, therefore, you probably should not prune until after it flowers - next summer (pruning now will encourage new growth at the point where you cut, which in turn will result in less blooming as you will have pruned off the "old" wood). If your Clematis blooms in the later part of summer into fall, then it produces flowers on the "new" wood (new wood being the newly grown part of the vine - the part that will grow next spring through the summer) - this type of clematis can be pruned now. With this in mind, regardless of when your Clematis blooms, removing some of the dead parts won't hurt. Your Clematis should come back next year, even if you leave it alone - this is the time of year for it to go into its dormant stage (rest period). I would be interested in knowing when your Clematis blooms, then maybe I can elaborate a bit more for you.
