Tomatoes in particular benefit from warm soil conditions. The black cover not oonly increases the temperature in the early and late season, but helps to maintain consistent temps. THe cover also keeps varmits from digging, limits the amount of rain entering the box, and prevents unwanted plants from growing in the soil
