With 1/2 oz. weight at .5mph your bait is probably coming up higher than you imagine.
I use from 1 to 2 oz. weights rigged carolina style and run about .7 to .8 mph and the bait stays at depth. Depending on the depth of the baitfish on the fishfinder, I would try to keep my bait just above or below it. Seems you have your tatics about the same as everyone else fishing for the line siders. If you can find them schooled up jigging bucktails is effective also.
