I have a 17ft boat, have same prob. During the colder months my livewell does just fine for trout. I buy them in a large bucket and have a battery operated air pump until I can get them in the live well. Most I've put in was 2.5lbs and never had a prob. It just pumps in fresh water. For shad or herring wont work. I purchased a 24gal oval graylline for shad. Havent used it yet, but I'm told it'll hold a decent amount of shad with the extra air pump. They also have some smaller ones if space is that tight for you.
