'Tis the season... Again.
60's ROCK 'n ROLL SHOW
By popular "insistence" we will be doing a 60's show sometime after the
first of the year. Possibly the end of January or first part of February.
Dates pending. No one guessed who one of our guest bands is featuring the
lead guitarist who studied under Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Wanna take
another shot at it? Hint: he is a Professor of Radiology at San Jacinto
College and leads a double life as a blues guitarist. He plays some
hellacious 60's rock!
BLUES-NAZIS
Last week, I used the term: Blues-Nazis. I received several inquiries as to
the meaning of this term. Blues-Nazi is a term that I came up with five
years ago when I released my first CD. Blues-Nazis, or, "Blues Purists" as
they are more often referred to, raked me over the coals. They proclaim
that the only people who can truly play the blues are either black, or
dead... or both. They believe that the blues must follow a certain musical
structure and should be played only on basic instrumentation. They also
insist that every non-black person from Elvis to SRV has ripped off the
black man's music and is not a true bluesman, (or blues woman). I am sure
that Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi and Carlos Santana worry
about it all the way to the bank.
Funny thing is, most of the Blues-Nazis that I have ever encountered are
white, Arian A-holes, drunk on the sound of their own voice spouting
meaningless facts of blues history. Most of the black artists that I have
worked with have been my kindred spirits and thankfully, look past the mere
paint job on this outer shell and see only the soul of a fellow blues
player. Who was it that said, "Blues ain't got no color"?
HOUSE BAND 2006?
We are currently negotiating with a large showcase club in the Houston area
to be their "House Band" every Friday and Saturday through the winter of
2006. How do ya'll feel about that? Would you get tired of having too much
of the same band?
Since variety is the spice of life, we could bring in some special guests
every Friday night? We could call it "The Friday Night Blues" and feature
some of Texas' legendary blues acts on stage with us every Friday night.
On Saturday nights, we could bring in some very special guests like:
"Cookie & the Cupcakes"! Remember them? They are still playing after all
these years!
