Posted by Sharon Jones With all the unofficial showcases, concerts, and events ongoing in Austin during the same time frame as SXSW, they chose a local small independant business man to go after: cancelling press credentials, banning the staff from attending any SXSW event, sending threatening letters to bands (that had been turned down by SXSW), calling clients of the Edge (record labels and alcohol companies) and bad mouthing The Edge as "unreliable" and "unsavory" which is just a load of whooie! We still made the events happen, we still brought loads of fans from San Antonio in buses (that The Edge paid for out of their own pocket, after their sponsors had been threatened off by SXSW attorneys). The Edge Magazine has been going strong for 8 years and covers all the heavier rock and metal scene that is tradionally ignored by Austin press, and there isn't a nicer, more honest man than Steve Freeman. He took all this negativity to heart, and in conjunction with ongoing health issues (sinus infection left too long unattended, as no insurance), the stress almost killed him. There have been so many bands volunteering to play benefits for Steve, and offers to help, that we're having a coordination meeting on Sunday at the Back Room. We'd welcome your attendance or representative to attend the meeting, if you'd like to be involved. Don't worry, this won't be an anti-SXSW event, we won't even be mentioning their name, I just want to give you a little personal background on what really caused the heart attack. If you can't make it, but still want to help, please let me know. Thanks! Sharon Jones 512-461-5782

Hola Friends,
Just wanted to let you know that we are holding a meeting on Sunday, 3pm at the Back Room to coordinate all the bands who want to help out and play a benefit for Steve Freeman, publisher and editor of The Edge Magazine. Freeman one of the biggest supporters of Central Texas metal and rock scenes had a heart attack (he's only 34 yrs old) on Saturday afternoon, 19 March, during SXSW (partially brought on by the stress of salvaging The Edge sponsored unofficial metal showcases ongoing during SXSW and dealing with the aftermath wrought by SXSW staff and attornies as they attempted to stop the shows from happening.)
