Posted by Paul Clearing The Bases, Juiced, Juicing The Game, Game of Shadows, The Juice, etc. I was looking for a quote from McGwire in the 1990's when he said in the winter of 1991 his brother Jay, a professional weight lifter, trained him so that he put on 20 lbs. in the off season and had a comeback year in 1992. In that interview, McGwire said he "dabbled with steroids" that winter and hadn't touched them since. I cannot find the reference anywhere now unfortunately. Mark was 215 lbs.-225 lbs. from 1987-1991. He said he stopped working out altogether in 1991. His biggest gain was that winter. In 1992 he was up to 245 lbs.-250 lbs. That is the weight he maintained the rest of his career. Canseco said he was up to 280 lbs. in 1998 but I have seen no evidence of that. In Juicing The Game, when Congress asked the players and comissioner to appear and talk about steroids, everyone refused but Canseco and Frank Thomas. Over the next week, a newpaper in New York published articles about undercover FBI agents sold McGwire steroids in the 1990's that was detailed to the exact formula he used - the recepie he ordered if you will. The book said the combination of what he was signified a "hardcore" user. Baseball couldn't ignore it and congress made them appear and speak under oath. The first point I want to make is that if McGwire started steroids in 1988 as Canseco said, or even 1992 with his brother Jay's help, McGwire didn't become a consistent slugging machine until mid-1995 after two years of injuries. If steroids are so amazing, the certainly did do much for him all of the years he supposedly took them before 1996. The second point I want to make is that I knew about Dan McGwire playing in the NFL but never knew who Jay was until McGwire said he gave him steroids to experiment with in the winter of 1991. I know the quote exists, but I can't find it. I searched google for "Jay McGwire" and found that indeed he is a professional weight lifter and trainer. You can see him and his website at www.mcgwiresfitness.com, so I'm not nuts! Another article said McGwire got his andro in 1998 through Jay who is such a heavy steroid user that the McGwire family had to have an intervention. Those two facts alone corroborate the quote I heard from McGwire. I'll post it if I can find it. Bottom line, still, McGwire used them, but steroids did not make McGwire the player he was. Paul

I spent all day yesterday at the bookstore reading all kinds of books on the steroid issue:
