Posted by Paul "The combination of what he was signified a hardcore user" is supposed to be, "The combination of what he used signified a hardcore user." "If steroids are so amazing, the certainly did do much for him..." is supposed to be, "If steroids are so amazing, they certainly didn't do much for him..." And to clarify, McGwire has always been a power hittter. 49 his rookie year, the first player to hit 30 his first four years in the majors. He hit just under 30 in 1991 but came back with 42 in 1992. In 1993 and 1994 due to injuries and the strike he hit less than 10 each year. He was out the first half of 1995 and went on a tear in the second half, hitting a homerun every 10 at bats and ending up with 39! That year he was hitting them farther than ever as well. The rest is history - 52 in 1996, 58 in 1997 (he would have broken the record if not for the trade to St. Loius which put him in a three week slump as he adjusted to NL pitching), 70 in 1998, 65 in 1999, and back to injuries and near 30 in 2000 and 2001. Even so, he was still hitting them 470 feet. So although he averages 30 homers a year with 4 50-plus homer seasons, he didn't become the prolific "Babe Ruth of our generation" until mid-1995. As opposed to helping him, some speculate that the steroids were the cause of all of his weak tendon injuries. So does steroids destroy you or make you a home run god? I guess both. Paul
