Posted by Paul You put a lot of work into this, good job. I agree that his biggest gain was 20-30 lbs. in the winter of 1991. I still have on video to this day spring training of 1992. Harold Baines hits a homer, then McGwire hits the next pitch off of the wall and ends up on second with a mullet, a goatee, and he looked like a football player - thighs buldging through his pants (calm down Sue). I ran to get my mom because he was so dramatically different from the baby-faced nice guy McGwire. I'm gonna try to have my video on youtube by the end of the week. During the FBI investigation of steroids in the early 1990's a dealer was arrested in July of 1992. His phonebook had both Canseco and McGwire's home numbers and Canseco's pager number. He made Canseco and supplied him but would not name other names. When asked about McGwire, he said, "No comment." This would mean McGwire was on steroids as early as 1988 when Canseco claims to have injected him. Bu this makes my case for me - if steroids were magic, they didn't help his miserable 1991 season one bit! ESPN's website has scanned a memo sent out on June 7, 1991 by Fay Vincent banning the use of any and all illegal substances after the FBI had investigated dealers and met Canseco in person getting the steroids numerous times. It threatened expuslion from the game. The same memo went out under Bud Selig in 1997. It wasn't until September 2002 that there was actual testing with penalties, so no one enforced the memo. Wow... Paul
