There are a lot of people around with "good records" in their chosen fields of endeavor who advanced in their work without cheating. McGwire made some choices during the congressional hearings - advised or not, it was his responsibility - which did nothing to help disuade our youth from cheating during the course of their growing-up. I don't see him as a bad person but his record has nothing to do with the unfortunate fact that our kids used to look up to him. Now they don't. He appears as just another celebrity who did whatever he needed to do to achieve what he felt he deserved.
