I agree. My son was was 9 during 98 (and my daughter was 3). He was obsessed by the whole thing and made a "count down" to breaking the record. Every day he would cross off a homerun (or two) off the chart. My daughter became interested because of this and had a lot of fun with her brother (she wasn't really old enough to understand). I think this is part of what hooked her into being a baseball fan. I have a few great pictures of them in front of the TV the night Mark broke the record.
All that being said, my son has taken this very hard. I can relate to what Tim said in that now he (my son) questions what really happened. My daughter actually came home upset one day because he gym teacher was talking to another teacher about Mark being a "cheater". I know I kind of babbled here, but my point is yes- I think he needs to settle it once and for all.
Of course, the real issue is that he has said he didn't do it but when he was "sworn in" he did the whole "not talking about the past" thing. Unless he is "sworn in" again (or says he did do something)people will continue to say he is lying.
