I am not a teacher but I work in a public school system and I would like to know where the "billions" is that gets given to us. It sure isn't at my school. We have almost twice the students we had four years ago and the state hasn't increased our budget in any of those years. We also have all these programs we have to put in place for No Child Left Behind but we get about an eighth of the funding we were told would be behind this new program. I don't disagree that there are bad teachers snd there should be a way to reward the good ones but until education becomes a priority things will stay the same. We would rather fight a war over non-existant WMDs than worry why third graders can't read.
As for the sports figures,no person, anywhere be it David Beckham or A-Rod is worth $250 million to play a game. Not even for 20 years. They get long term contracts and by the end of those contracts many of them don't deserve the league minimum. Maybe they should all get 1-2 year contracts max and get paid on their performance from year-to-year the way most of the rest of us do. Hey I like that idea! The money the teams don't end up spending on useless players could be used to improve the schools in those communities. Maybe then we'd see some improvement in both areas.
Don't even get me started on the movie stars!
