Just an aside, you are probably one of the people who think teachers et al shouldn't whine about their salaries when they get July and August off. Most professional sports players have longer "off seasons" than we do. Don't tell me they are all working hard in the off season either, what do you think the teachers are doing? Eating bon bons? They are in the schools, on their own time, planning and preparing for the next school year. by: Taylor Mali He reminded the other dinner guests that it's true what they say about teachers: "Those who can...do. Those who can't ... teach." To corroborate, he said to another guest: "You're a teacher, Susan," he said. "Be honest. What do you make?" Susan, who had a reputation of honesty and frankness, replied, "You want to know what I make?
You act as if you know me because I work in a public school. My family is probably considered "rich" ,and I certainly don't believe anyone is "out to get me". I don't believe in extended welfare. It is obvious you don't have a clue. I believe in vouchers and teacher accoutability. I believe in taking responsibility for your actions and showing respect to teachers and other authority figures. If you knew anything about child development, you would know it is fairly developmentally appropriate for eight graders to think adults are stupid. The worst ones though are students who are taught that teachers are useless and have no authority. They don't learn this at school, they learn it at home. I would dread for one of our teachers to have your child in their classes because you sound like the kind of parent who says "Not my kid, it must be the teacher's fault." If you know it all then you should be in the school "educating" the children instead of blaming those of us who do for doing it wrong. As for my "job", I love almost every minute of my time with the students and I love watching them grow and develop into intelligent, caring human beings. It is a wonderful career that I wouldn't trade. The players and their "trials and travails" ? I don't feel bad for them at all. Again, the money they make is ridiculous and any real work they have to put in is justified. Again, none of them could tolerate the "trails and travails" at my job either. I dare anyone of them (or you) to teach a Kindergarten class and come back the next day.
WHAT TEACHERS MAKE
The dinner guests were sitting around the table
discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain the problem with education. He argued:
"What's a kid going to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a teacher?"
I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face if the student did not do his or her very best.I can make kids sit through 40 minutes of study hall in absolute silence.I can make parents and children tremble in fear when I call home. You want to know what I make? I make kids wonder.I make them question.I make them criticize.I make them apologize and mean it.I make them write.I make them read, read, read.
I make them spell definitely, beautiful, definitely, beautiful and definitely, beautiful over and over and over again, until they will never misspell either one of those words again.
I make them show all their work in math and hide it all on their final drafts in English.
I make them understand that if you have the brains, then follow your heart...and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you pay them no attention! They didn't learn.
You want to know what I make? I make a difference. What do you make?"
