Baseball cares about the personal lives of its players and whether or not they use illegal drugs for matters of role models and public relations. McGwire's image was protected, fashioned, and marketed for the profit of MLB. When MLB needed a fall guy to protect their public image, McGwire was the scapegoat. MLB at least has to pretend to care. Unfortuantely the news reports today that he was drunk, nearly twice the legal limit, was drunk when he left the restaurant, and marijuana was found in the vehichle. He was on the phone with a woman he was going to meet at another bar.
