His donations to charity speak loudly about his character. If we are to keep anyone out of the hall, it should be admitted cheaters Bonds and Rose, etc... not a man who is merely "questionable." I, for one, would vote McGwire and any of the others into the hall if I had a say. I hope the rest of the voters can appreciate what he did for the game and come to their senses... they need to start thinking in a historical train of thought... with their minds and not their bitter media-fueled hearts.
Let us assume that McGwire DID do everything illegal. Let us assume that he IS a fraud and freak of science/cheating. Those two assumptions made... he played the game of baseball. He played the game and dominated. His numbers associated with any "clean" player would guarantee that player induction into the hall of fame. Now... before you are offended... we are assuming he cheated. That assumption made, he still belongs in the hall of fame. You wouldn't leave out Hitler and the holocaust from a history museum... because IT HAPPENED.
Based on those above assumptions, players like McGwire, Bonds, Rose... all belong in the hall of fame.
Whether their induction is marked or noted with controversy, that is up to the people in charge at the hall of fame.
Regardless, these great men should be honored in history as the best of their time.
