I got a rare evening off from work, even getting home before my wife. I've just been sitting in my basement, aka my "McGwire Shrine", and thinking about the great memories Big Mac provided me with through the years. Unlike most of the people on this board, or apparently so, I didn't have the advantage of being near Mark's home/stadium/etc..., so I had to "worship" him from afar. I only got to see him play in person once. Back in 1996, in Kansas City. It was the most memorable weekend of my life at that point. My dad got tickets to all three games of the series, and we spent all weekend up there, just the two of us. I remember the second game, he hit one down the right field line, not far from our seats. I thought it was out, trying to will the ball over the fence, but bounced off the top for a double. He didn't come close again, but what a thrill. I tried to get Mark's autograph before and after each game, finally succeeding after the last game as he was walking to the bus. I was shaking horribly- I had just turned sixteen, and told my dad I couldn't drive. I had planned all off-season on taking a trip to St. Louis in 2002, and was devastated when I heard he had retired. I will always treasure that weekend, and would love to thank Mark personally for all the years of enjoyment he gave to me and my family. I love talking about Mark with my wife, and can't wait to sit my kids on my lap as we look through my McGwire binders and tell them all about baseball's greatest slugger. Here's to Mac, and to the hope that someday soon the rest of the baseball world sees him like I do.
