I have the Mitchell report here in front of me and McGwire is mentioned 46 times in it. Mitchell didn't get much cooperation from any player, but McGwire's insistence on running away from this just make him look worse. It's obvious he used, and for a lengthy time. His refusal to say anything, even "I didn't do it" at the hearing a couple of years ago pretty much summed it up for him. I'm as big a fan of Mac as anyone. Like you guys I have tons of memoribilia and his best HR's on tape. I'm still a fan and still amazed my his accomplishments. I'm also realistic. I've posted here before on my stance of Mac being guilty of using. I've been in bodybuilding for several years. I know it when I see it...and as mentioned before, if that wasn't enough his lack of a denial at the hearing cemented it. I'm still a fan, but I'm disappointed in him...and not so much because he used, but because he's gone into hiding. He should have stepped up when he had the chance.
I understand that many of you simply don't want to believe it. I didn't either. Mark is a great individual, he's done enormous amounts of work for charities, he was friendly and approachable during his career. None of this means he was above getting a competitve edge or using something that could finally keep him off the DL for a whole season so he could put up the numbers we all knew he was capable of. You can like and admire him, but don't turn a blind eye to what is painfully obvious...that's what baseball did years ago and that's why we're where we are now.
