Okay, Mac. I'll admit that Mark was not the greatest hitter in the game. But how do you measure the greatness of a hitter? The frequency of hits per at bats, or what knowledgable baseball fans call the "batting average". So how do you measure the greatness of a power hitter? Their home run per at bat ratio, of course. And who, oh who, has the best ratio in the history of the game of baseball? Big Mac. Orage Crush. MARK DAVID MCGWIRE. He wasn't the best fielder ever, either. However, are you going to rule out every DH from ever entering the Hall of Fame? He was at least out on the field, and could catch the ball. That's basically all that's required of a first baseman. He wasn't a demon on the bases, but asking Mark to steal second would be like asking a defensive lineman to run a deep post pattern. It's not his job. Mark's job was to hit get on base and drive in runs, but overall to entertain fans. He did that better than anyone. You can't sit there and tell me you weren't mesmerized along with the rest of us back in 1998, glued to the tv in anticipation of his next home run without calling yourself out as a hypocrite, along with all the BBWAA. So I suggest the next time you think you have something intelligent to say about Mark, you don't say it here, where people know and appreciate not only McGwire, but the game of baseball. This has been a Travis January rant. God bless, and GO CARDS!!
