I have been videotaping McGwire most of his career and every year from 1998-2001 in telecasts and in interviews he was called a definite hall of famer. The 500 club guaranteed that, they all stated. The Babe Ruth of our generation, possibly the greatest power hitter the game has ever seen, others said arguably. He saved the game of baseball, an American hero, and on and on it went. Even in his retirement interview Rich Eisen said, "You're gonna go to the Hall of Fame" in a very "duh" voice. In other words, his induction was a no doubter. All of sudden since his performance before Congress all we hear is, "You know, except for the homeruns, his stats look mediocre, like Joes Canseco's" or "Paul Molitor and Dale Murphey were better players than him."
Overall, his stats aren't incredible besides the homeruns, but HOF voting is based on the complete package. Even Mike Schmidt agrees he's a definite hall of famer if not for the cheating suspicion.
