: My wife and I recently returned to Southeast
: New Mexico to visit her family. We ended up
: spending quite a bit of time with her mother
: (whom I consider to be a close friend) and
: we actually ended up catching the opening
: night of "Signs". Anyway, after
: the movie we were driving back to my
: mother-in-law's house and we were sharing
: our own personal stories of the
: supernatural, etc. My wife's mother told a
: very odd story. Normally when I hear things
: of this nature, unless I have experienced
: them myself, I take them with a grain of
: salt. My mother-in-law is a spiritually
: devout woman. She is humble, pleasant to be
: around, and a very temperate person in views
: and in actions. I guess knowing that she is
: such a person made me take her story much
: more seriously that I usually would have. OK
: so this is what she told us:
: Some time in the mid to late 60's,
: approxiametly 40yrs ago, in the small
: Southeastern New Mexico town of Lovington
: she, four of her siblings, and two of her
: cousins were stalked by something that in
: retrospect sounds a lot like the creature
: described in the reports of Mount Pleasant.
: The seven of them were walking home one
: evening from the city park, on a deserted
: dirt road, when one of them noticed a very
: large (well over 6' tall) person lurking
: behind them in the shadows. The kids were
: all raging in the ages of 6 to 14 and they
: immediatly became very frightened. They
: picked up the pace of their jaunt in hopes
: of leaving whomever or whatever it was
: behind. When they looked back, this thing
: was on the road and closing on them fast.
: The children panicked and began running at
: top speed. Several of them turned at the
: last moment and the descriptions of what
: they saw still gives me goosebumps.
: Apparently it had a tail and was wearing,
: what they thought at the time, was a cloak.
: It had glowing eyes and it's face was
: grotesquely mishapen. It loomed up from
: behind them on the road and then suddenly
: zoomed over their heads, flying off into the
: night. The kids ran straight home and by the
: time their parent's arrived, were all found
: cowering under their beds crying. My
: mother-in-law's story was confirmed by those
: of her siblings who were present and they
: still have no idea today, 40 years later,
: exactly what it was they encountered. I've
: seen the spot where this event happened and
: until my wife and I got back from vacation
: this week, was unaware of the decriptive as
: well as temporal relations of this siting to
: the one's in Mount PLeasant. Once again I
: have no real opinion on this, at least from
: an explanatory view, but I do know that my
: mother-in-law is as reliable a witness as I
: would ever hope to meet. Does anyone know of
: similar occurences in the Southwest?
: Lovington is about 90 miles from Roswell and
: I know they've got a reputation for that
: type of thing. I'm unfamilar with the
: subject, though, and am curious to know if
: anyone has any info.
