For some preachers it's about atmosphere so if the sermonic song doesn't do set the right mood before they preach, they will do it themselves. Or if the sermonic song is totally different from their sermon subject, they will sing a song that pertains to the sermon.

Or..as professor said, they just want to show their singing skills (or lack thereof).
